New Media: Broadband & Digital Convergence |
Digital convergence is the merging of audio, video, and data into a single source that can be delivered by one device to another. With the developing capacity to transfer digital information more rapidly through broadband networks, convergence will increasingly place media, communications and information at the centre of most people's lives. While there are benefits to sourcing greater volumes of international content through such digital networks, Australians also need to share local experiences and stories through digital cultural expression. The AFC takes an active interest in examining the ramifications of convergent trends in Australian new media and emerging broadband environments for Australian content. |

Flexible Vision: A snapshot of emerging audiovisual technologies and services, and options for supporting Australian content, AFC Report
This AFC report is based upon a compendium of new and forthcoming audiovisual services as at November 2003. Its principal contention is that decisions about future regulatory options need to be a part of a broad communications review rather than settled pre-emptively in the haste of trade negotiations.

This report by Marion Jacka explores the threats and opportunities posed by digital convergence for Australian audiovisual content providers. This study demonstrated that a number of overseas trends are becoming apparent here including the trend to cross-media content, the uncertainty of revenue streams and the cost of developing and repurposing content for different and often competing platforms. |
