The 2007/08 feature slate included 29 Australian titles and five co-productions.
At $168 million, the value of production activity for this slate (as measured by budget expenditure in Australia) was less than last year’s result of $234 million. However, it should be remembered that the high-budget feature Australia was included in last year’s slate. The 2007/08 result was just above the five-year average of $162 million.
The 29 Australian features in this year’s slate had total budgets of $128 million, compared to a five-year average of $147 million. This is the highest recorded result for local features if large-budget foreign-financed titles are removed from the equation (in particular, Happy Feet in 2003/04 and Australia in 2006/07).
The distribution of Australian features across the various budget ranges was similar to the five-year average except in the lower ranges, where there was a shift from the under $1 million range into the $1–3 million range. (Features with budgets of less than $500,000 are included in the survey only if they have had a festival screening or cinema release; see ‘Methodology’ on page 14.)
The five co-productions in the slate accounted for expenditure in Australia of $49 million, well above the five-year average of $23 million. Three of these were official co-productions: two with the UK (Bright Star and Triangle), and one with Canada (Goblin Shark Attack). Two were unofficial co-productions with the US (Broken Hill and Knowing).
