The Australian Film Commission (AFC) today announced a diverse range of projects - from a comedy about an obsessive young man who creates a mathematical formula to locate the girl of his dreams to a drama about a couple who are tested to breaking point when they travel to Calcutta to adopt a child - that will be developed by the filmmakers selected to participate in its 2007 IndiVision Project Lab.
The IndiVision Project Lab is a script-to-screen professional hothouse for Australian filmmakers developing low-budget feature films. The group of experienced and talented writers, producers and directors selected to participate in this year's Lab includes established and emerging filmmakers from Australia and New Zealand.
Producer Amanda Higgs (The Secret Life of Us) has teamed up with award-winning stage and screen writer Debra Oswald for Gary's House, the story of a man who works his guts out to build a house single-handedly on a godforsaken scrap of land, until his hard-bitten sister shows up to stake her claim.
Producers Michele Bennett (Chopper) and Anastasia Sideris will attend the Lab with director Kriv Stenders (The Illustrated Family Doctor, Blacktown), and writer Tim Maricic to develop the sci-fi horror film Stranded 3, in which contestants in a Survivor-style television reality show are forced to become real survivors when they discover that Australia has been overrun by a race of psychotic mutants.
Actor and comedian Tania Lacy has come together with producers Robyn Kershaw and Romy Moshinsky and director Daina Reid to develop Blogger Girl, the story of a woman who decides to fake her overseas trip using a false internet blog and soon discovers her 'virtual' life is no match for the realities of day-to-day living.
For the first time, the IndiVision Project Lab will include a project from New Zealand, in a move to encourage collaboration between the Australian and New Zealand industries. Producer Fiona Copland (Topless Women Talk About Their Lives), writer/director Michael Bennett, and writer/associate producer Gavin Strawhan will attend the Lab to develop Exit 50 with support from the New Zealand Film Commission.
Advisors and speakers include internationally acclaimed Danish writer Mogens Rukov (Festen) and award-winning American producer Paul Mezey (Half Nelson), producers Julie Ryan (Ten Canoes), Lynda House (Muriel's Wedding), John Maynard (The Boys), Anton Smit (Twin Sisters), Al Clark (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) and Matt Hearn (Wolf Creek), writers Andrew Bovell (Lantana) and Michael Petroni (Till Human Voices Wake Us), director Scott Hicks (Shine), actor John Jarratt (Wolf Creek), performance consultants Steven Vidler (Blackrock) and David Field (Oyster Farmer), and concept designer Rowan Cassidy (Moulin Rouge).
The Lab takes place in Sydney, 1-7 February 2007.
