Australian Film Commission Announces Fifth Million Dollar Movie

30 November 1999

The Australian Film Commission (AFC) has announced that LA SPAGNOLA (THE SPANISH WOMAN) will be the fifth Million Dollar Movie.

Million Dollar Movies has been a joint initiative of the AFC and SBS Independent, with Beyond Films as sales agent, to fund the production of five films with budgets of $1 million each over a three-year period.

LA SPAGNOLA is a passionate and comic portrayal of immigrant life in a dry, dusty Australian town in the 60s. The story revolves around Lola and her battles with her ex-husband, her daughter, bill collectors, suitors, her own people, her own temper, prejudice and the elements.

It is written by Anna Maria Monticelli, who will also produce the film with Philip Hearnshaw. Anna Maria is a writer and AFI award winning actress, with credits that include SILVER CITY, SMASH PALACE, THE EMPTY BEACH and NOMADS. Philip Hearnshaw was associate producer on BABE.

LA SPAGNOLA will be directed by Steve Jacobs. Steve began his directing career making experimental films but his career path turned from filmmaking to acting with a string of well known titles to his name including BLUE MURDER, FATHER, ALICE TO NOWHERE and DIRTWATER DYNASTY.
