IntroductionClermont-Ferrand is widely regarded as one of the most important short film events on the international festival calendar. With its associated Short Film Market, impressive festival and market catalogues, and with over $53,000 AUD in prize money, Clermont-Ferrand is working towards making the short film format more commercially viable. Since 1990, Australia has had over 80 films screened at Clermont (51 of which were In Competition).
Sections of the Festival Competitive Program
International Competition: More than 2000 films are submitted each year to the International Selection Committee who select around 70 titles for the International Competition. Films are screened in 14 separate 95-minute programs
Lab Competition: This is open to French and international productions on digital media, not exceeding 40 minutes. Selected films screen on Digital Betacam (PAL). The aim of this section is to present short films made on digital media and highlighting new practices and/or forms of expression. Each year around 40 films screen in this section.
National Competition: More than 600 French films are submitted each year to the National Selection Committee who select around 70 titles for the National Competition. Films are screened in 12 separate 95-minute programs.
Non Competitive Program
In addition to the competitions, Clermont Ferrand presents programs of shorts focusing on a particular country, theme or retrospective. 15 separate 95-minute programs present 75 short films from the past and present of world production, thus giving the audience the opportunity to watch rare or never-seen-before films and enjoy seeing great classic short films again.
