Units and value of video product (DVD, Blu-ray and VHS) sold, 1998–2008

Next update March 2010

The value of video sales continues to rise, up by 6 per cent to $1,306.6 million in 2008 from $1,231.3 milion the previous year. The only fall was in 2005, when increasing DVD sales were not sufficient to offset plummeting VHS sales. Since then, the annual average growth rate has been 11 per cent.

Due to very low demand for VHS titles (less than 1 per cent of total units sold in 2007), VHS sales are no longer taken into account. The emerging high-definition Blu-ray format has been included for the first time in 2008, and accounted for around 2 per cent of total value and 1 per cent of units sold.
