Federal film agency profiles The Australian Film Commission
(AFC) is the Federal Government’s agency for supporting
the development of film, television and interactive digital media
projects and their creators, particularly in the independent sector.
The AFC provides resources, mainly in the form of finance and information,
to people, projects, organisations and events. Integrated with the National
Film and Sound Archive (formerly ScreenSound Australia) from 2003/04
to 2007/08. To be merged into Screen Australia as of 1 July 2008. The National Film and Sound Archive
(NFSA) was created as a separate Commonwealth collecting
institution in 1984, and changed its name to ScreenSound Australia in
1999. Total revenues from the Federal Government increased in 1999/00
to allow for loan payments on a new headquarters building and to
maintain the capital value of the collection. ScreenSound Australia was
integrated with the Australian Film Commission in July 2003 and
its original name, the National Film and Sound Archive, was reinstated
in December 2004. To be reestablished as an independent agency as of
1 July 2008. Film Australia is a Federal Government-owned production
and distribution company; it is one of the nation’s largest producers
and distributors of television documentaries and educational programs.
Through the National Interest Program it receives finance to devise,
produce and distribute programs which deal with matters of national interest
to Australia or illustrate and interpret aspects of Australian life.
The 1988/89 figure published excludes a $10 million capital injection
for purchase of shares in the company (Film Australia Ltd) which commenced
in that year. The organisation received additional funding over three
years from 2005/06 for ten high-end documentaries about Australian history
under its History Intiative, Making History.
To be merged into Screen Australia as of 1 July 2008. The Film Finance Corporation
Australia (FFC) is a wholly owned
national company providing support for feature films, telemovies,
mini-series and documentaries. It supports a diverse range of culturally
relevant material through equity investment, undertaken in partnership
with the film and television marketplace, including distributors, sales
agents, broadcasters and private investors. To be merged into Screen
Australia as of 1 July 2008. The Australian Film Television
and Radio School (AFTRS) is the national
centre for professional education and advanced training in film, broadcasting
and interactive media for Australian citizens and permanent residents.
The Australian Children’s
Television Foundation (ACTF) is a national non-profit organisation
created to encourage development, production and dissemination of television
programs, films and other audiovisual media for children and to promote
these programs in the community. The Commercial Television Production
Fund (CTPF) was established in 1994
for a three-year term to increase the amount, diversity and quality of
Australian television drama, documentaries and children’s
programs. During its term it committed $55 million to 38 projects, representing
80 hours of new television programming with total production budgets
worth $75 million. The AFC reinvests revenue from these projects
in various producer development schemes. SBS Independent (SBSi) was established in June 1994 to commission Australian
drama and documentaries from the independent sector for screening on
SBS Television. It receives funding from the Special Broadcasting Service
(SBS) through its annual appropriation, but the greater part of SBSi
finance comes directly from the Federal Government through the
Special Production Fund. Ausfilm is a representative
body for the Australian film, television and commercial industry, promoting
Australia worldwide as a destination for screen production. It provides
information to overseas producers about locations, cast and crew, studios,
technicians and creative talent, as well as government regulations, tax
incentives and legal and financial issues. Ausfilm is a collaboration
of over 60 private sector companies, Australia's seven state film agencies,
Austrade and the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the
Arts (DEWHA). |
