THE NEW BLACK is a drama initiative of the Indigenous Branch of the Australian Film Commission, in association with the ABC, New South Wales Film and Television Office (FTO), Pacific Film and Television Commission (PFTC) and ScreenWest.

THE NEW BLACK will comprise six 10-minute dramas, designed to bring Indigenous stories to the screen, authored and crafted by Indigenous people.

Up to six outstanding story ideas will be chosen for production. Compelling characters, whose stories contain fresh and insightful points of view, will drive each story. Projects that advance Indigenous filmmaking and storytelling in this country will be favoured.

Innovation in storytelling and approach to production will be highly regarded.

No experience in television writing or production is required, but a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in this field is essential. This initiative is also open to emerging practitioners who have previously completed a short film.
