Bit of Black Business

Goal

This fund is now closed

The business of being black today takes many forms…outrageous, courageous, mysterious, simple, straightforward and complex…the good, the bad and the ugly…but what makes our bit of business unique?

The AFC and SBSi called on Indigenous program-makers from across Australia to submit 5 minute drama story ideas that explore individual notions and experiences of contemporary Black 'Business', from the unique perspective of Indigenous Australians.

Bit of Black Business provided the opportunity for emerging Indigenous program-makers to experiment in the short format and gave first time program-makers the opportunity to make their first television drama.

Up to 13 outstanding story ideas were to be chosen. Each story was expected to be driven by a compelling contemporary character, whose story contains fresh and insightful points of view on black business today.

No experience in television writing or production was required, but a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in this field was essential.

Successful projects were to be programmed on SBS as part of a television series with a common opening sequence.

SBS will be entitled to unlimited runs over five years and will also have the non-exclusive right to webcast the programs.

Projects

  • Up to 20 projects were to be selected for development.
  • Total development funding will be up to a maximum of $1,500 per project.

Eligibility

  • Applications from new and emerging Indigenous writers and writer/directors will be accepted. To maximise the limited screen time and
budgets available, program-makers should consider ideas that have 1-2 major characters, limited extras, and minimal location changes.
  • Each project must have Indigenous Australians in key creative roles (minimum Indigenous writer/director).
  • Each project must have a censorship rating no greater than PG and should be no longer than 5 minutes, including titles and credits.
  • It is a requirement that the projects are shot on HD Format and delivered on DVC Pro.
  • Applications with a strong story idea, but no director in place, will be accepted.
