The Australian Film Commission

The Australian Film Commission operates as part of the Commonwealth Film Program as the agency responsible for supporting the development of film, television and interactive media projects and their creators. The AFC focuses its efforts on the independent production sector, namely companies and individuals who are not affiliated with broadcasters or major distribution and exhibition companies.

As the primary development agency for the Australian film, television and interactive content production industry, the AFC will resource and facilitate the industry to play a central role in the cultural life of Australia and deliver diverse and creatively ambitious programs that compete successfully for audiences around the world.

In order to achieve this vision, the AFC has set for itself a number of specific objectives:

  • to resource and facilitate the development of outstanding Australian film, television and interactive media projects
  • to resource and facilitate the career development of writers, directors and producers with the potential to make a significant contribution in their chosen fields
  • to resource and facilitate the participation of Indigenous Australians in the Australian film, television and interactive media production industries
  • to resource and facilitate the participation of Australian film, television and interactive media practitioners and their programs in the global marketplace
  • to support activities and events which:
    - provide the wider Australian community, including regional Australia, with opportunities to access screen activities
    - are critical to the development of the community of Australian filmmakers and interactive digital media producers
  • to collect, analyse and disseminate high-quality information about the financing, production and performance of Australian programs and programs made in Australia and develop, and participate in the development of, industry policy in consultation with stakeholders.

The Annual Report responds to these objectives, and provides detailed information on how these objectives have been met.

The AFC also administers the Australian Government's Official Co-production Program and revenues from projects supported by the Commercial Television Production Fund.

The Corporate Plan is available on the AFC website at www.afc.gov.au
