School Screen provides school students with access to high-quality free Australian film screening events in local cinemas or, if there is no easily accessible local cinema, in their own school.
Since 2000 the Australian Film Commission's Big Screen and its schools screening program, School Screen, has been making available the very best of Australian films to schools around regional Australia. In those seven years over 82,500 students have experienced free screenings of Australian films in locations as diverse as Cloncurry, Woomera, Mullewa and Burnie. In 2007, over 24,500 students had access to a total of 180 screenings, all of which took place in regional, rural and remote Australia. It is the AFC's key strategy to facilitate and deliver opportunities for schools to access and engage with screen culture, especially in regional Australia.
School Screen provides free screenings to all regional schools and offers school students the opportunity to view and discuss contemporary and classic features, shorts and documentaries in local communities throughout regional Australia.
The AFC works closely with the Departments of Education and Training in each state, as well as Head Teachers in individual high schools, to ensure that the School Screen program supports quality curriculum outcomes.
School Screen makes access to Australian screen culture as easy as possible for all teachers and students. Free screenings take place in local cinemas, and if there is no local cinema available schools have access to an extensive range of feature films, documentaries and shorts, available for borrowing at no cost. The 2008 Primary Program and 2008 Secondary Program web pages contain lists of all films, documentaries and shorts on offer to schools around regional Australia. All session details, including town, venue and time can be found using the links provided. You can use this list to explore detailed information on each film, including synopsis, classification, duration and curriculum links. Be sure to consider all of this information when choosing a film appropriate for school students. The AFC is keen to assist you in choosing the most engaging and suitable screening for your students, helping to provide an exciting and memorable screen culture experience.
The Resources page contains free AFC film study guides for a number of films. These are free to download and have been designed specifically for classroom use. There are also links to many other study guides provided by Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM), the Australian Children's Television Foundation (ACTF) and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).
