AFC congratulates Australian Oscar nominees

13 February 2002

The Australian Film Commission today congratulated the Australian filmmakers and actors nominated for Academy Awards, noting that three decades of consistent development of the local industry had now consolidated Australia as a nation of filmmakers and actors equal to any in the world.

Eight nominations for the Australian film Moulin Rouge, plus acting and technical nominations for The Lord of the Rings and A Beautiful Mind, totalled ten Australian nominations. There were ten Australian nominations in 1995 (Babe, Braveheart) and in 1996 (Shine, The English Patient, The Portrait of a Lady).*

Moulin Rouge is the fourth Australian film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year. Shine was nominated for the award in 1996, Babe in 1995 and The Piano in 1993.*

"The Australian Film Commission and, more recently, the Australian Film Finance Corporation have supported and financed many of the films which developed the careers of the Australian nominees. The rich pool of Australian talent now working internationally was nurtured in the local industry developed by the AFC and the other film agencies, and supported by successive Federal and State Governments," said Kim Dalton, Chief Executive of the Australian Film Commission.

The Sum of Us, Spotswood, Proof and Romper Stomper are among the films that set Russell Crowe on the path to three consecutive Best Actor Academy Award nominations, and Nicole Kidman established her career in Australia with such films as Flirting, Emerald City and Dead Calm. Director and producer Baz Luhrmann and his creative partner Catherine Martin (art direction, costume design) began their film careers with Strictly Ballroom. Jill Bilcock edited Strictly Ballroom and, amongst others, Head On and Muriel's Wedding. Cinematographer Andrew Lesnie's Australian film credits include The Sugar Factory, Doing Time for Patsy Cline, Spider & Rose and The Delinquents.
