Key statistics on businesses in the video hire industry, 1999/00At the end of June 2000, there were 1,166 businesses in the video hire industry, operating from 1,615 outlets – about 50 per cent fewer than the 3,181 outlets at the end of June 1992, as identified in the 1991/92 ABS Retail Census. The total income for these businesses during 1999/00 was $595 million, of which 29 per cent was accounted for by the 10 largest businesses in the industry. The industry recorded an operating profit before tax of $42 million, which represented an operating profit margin of 7.2 per cent. There were 11,034 persons working for businesses in the video hire industry at the end of June 2000, a decrease of around 15 per cent on the 13,032 identified in the 1991/92 ABS Retail Census. Casual employees accounted for 66 per cent of employment in June 2000, with the remainder comprising 18 per cent permanent full-time, 9 per cent permanent part-time employees and 7 per cent working proprietors and partners of unincorporated businesses.
