Value of retail sales of games hardware and software, 2000–2007

In 2007, retail sales of gaming hardware and software surpassed the one billion dollar mark, reaching $1,328.3 million, a 44 per cent increase from the previous year. Both hardware and software sales increased (by 76 per cent and 26 per cent respectively), with consoles contributing the largest share of value, almost doubling in the 12-month period. This corresponds with the Australian launch of two new ‘next generation’ consoles: Nintendo Wii near the end of 2006 and Playstation 3 in March 2007.
