Next update late 2008

Based on Census data, employment grew between 1996 and 2001 for residents of all states except South Australia and the Northern Territory, with the highest growth rates in the ACT (32 per cent), Western Australia (24 per cent) and NSW (23 per cent).

The ACT and WA saw particular growth in the production, exhibition and video hire industries, while exhibition and television were the main components of increased employment for NSW and Victorian residents. However, Victoria saw a drop in employment in the production industry as well as accounting for most of the fall in the distribution industry.

For Queenslanders there were higher levels of employment in the exhibition industry, but lower levels in production and distribution. Tasmanians on the other hand saw a significant increase in production industry employment as well as exhibition. but a slight fall in television.

South Australians saw a fall in production industry and television industry employment, with increases in exhibition and video hire not enough to create an overall increase for the state.

Likewise for the Northern Territory, increases in exhibition and production did not make up for lower employment levels in television, video hire and distribution.
