Copyright Collecting Societies

Copyright collecting societies collect royalties and distribute them to members who hold copyright in film, sound recording and visual art. The societies ensure that their members collect royalties where it is difficult to do so on an individual basis, as well as provide a point of contact for people seeking permission to use material.

Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners' Society (AMCOS)
Street: 6-12 Atchison St, St Leonards
Post: Locked Bag 3665, St Leonards NSW 2065
Ph: (02) 9935 7900

Email: via webpage
Web: www.amcos.com.au

By arrangement, the Australasian Performing Rights Association Limited (APRA) administers the rights of AMCOS, who represent virtually all music publishers in Australia and New Zealand and, by way of reciprocal arrangements, the vast majority of the world's composers, writers and music publishers. While APRA and AMCOS remain independent companies, following an agreement reached on 1 July 1997, APRA manages the affairs of AMCOS and the organisations' staff and offices have been amalgamated.

APRA represents 30,000 music writer and publisher members. As part of a worldwide network of similar organisations, APRA also provides local representation for more than 1,000,000 international composers. APRA has five offices in Australia and an office in New Zealand. Each office handles both licensing and membership matters.

ARIA operates to represent the broad interests of its member record companies, who range from small boutique labels to large companies. ARIA performs four main functions: it acts as an advocate for the industry; it collects statistical information and compiles charts; it offers a focus point for industry information and views; and it offers a blanket licensing function on behalf of its members for various copyright users.
